What is the Best Advertising for Fishing Guides & Charters?

Chris Hustad • Dec 31, 2022

There are a few rules, if you will, to the organic search results on Google/Bing/etc.

Normally, our clients do not pay for advertising. Why? Because if they rank well organically, they really don’t have to.

But there are instances where we may recommend it, especially for the short term.

I will break down the best options, and the reasons for choosing them.

Facebook Advertising for Fishing Guides & Charters

Facebook has been a viable choice for Fishing Charters and Fishing Guides across the country for many years now.  Why?

Well first off, it’s considered an “Older People’s Social Media”, which isn’t anything new.  But take a look at your clientele, and tell me the average age of your customers?  I’m going to guess it’s up there.

The older generations book trips, and have the most money, so reaching them on their social media of choice isn’t a bad option.

With Facebook advertising, you can target exactly what you’re looking for in terms of demographics, geotargeting, etc.

So for example, these settings do quite well for many:

  1. Set an older age, usually around 40+.
  2. Find the geographic range where most of your clients come from.
  3. Set those with interests in fishing or hunting.
  4. Set a daily spend - done!

While the exact settings may differ a bit, you get where I’m going with this.  Set your target market and run with it!

Google Ads Agency

Very few of our clients run Google Ads.  Just like Facebook, the main reason is quite simply; they don’t have to.  But there are instances where this would be a viable option, especially for brand new websites.

The day a new website goes live, it normally takes at least 90 days before you start seeing much for results on the search engines, organically (the non-paid results).  So to fill that gap, we often will use Google Ads if the client needs immediate results (while the website catches up organically).

Google ads are up our alley, simply because we work with this search engine the most.  There is a drawback, however, in that Google Ads are very complicated to set up.  A few wrong settings and your spend is gobbled up, quick, with often very little to show for it.

So if you’re looking to take on Google ads, I highly recommend working with an agency for this.

Keep in mind, MOST marketing firms take a percentage of your spend each month.  I’ve seen as high as ⅔’s of the spend going to the agency, leaving the client only ⅓ of their actual marketing budget going towards their spend.  Ouch.

So if you’re agency shopping for this, you should ask, out front, how do they charge?  They should be transparent, and if not, run!

Here at Outfitter Logic, we don’t pocket ANY of the budget.  We simply charge a fee to set up and maintain it.  Simple.

Direct Website Advertising

This is kind of old school, however, it can still reap all kinds of benefits.

I come from a long history of selling advertising on the web.  I owned/operated 11 hunting and fishing forums in the early 2000s, and sold millions of ad impressions each year.

While the way websites are used has changed a bit, the marketing potential is still there.  The key is choosing the right websites that have interests that you offer.  And nowadays, with website advertising going kind of stale, you can shop for solid advertising deals at most websites.

Most website owners will roll out the red carpet for premium sponsors, so choose those that do a great job of promoting.  And while social media has taken over for a decade now, you can still find website communities existing in most outdoor niches.

If you need any help choosing, we can certainly assist!   Not only can we help choose the right options, we can optimize the budget for you as well.

Fishing Charters & Fishing Guide Advertising Recap

While there are a ton of options that exist on the web, I still feel these are your best 3 options that I described.  I feel spending money on the “younger” social media is a waste, as they’re not the one’s with money and flexibility to book a trip.

As noted earlier, if you’d like any help with any of these 3 options for your business, feel free to reach out.  Our consultation is FREE, and we’re very transparent in what we do.  We hope to hear from you…
