           It’s a new year and most guides and outfitters are revisiting their marketing efforts around this time. I’m hoping the season went well for all, but in reality, usually the same guys are busy all the time. But why?

           Well I can tell you, that I’m still amazed how many non-mobile-friendly sites there are still out there today. Usually, it’s either an old, outdated design or maybe the guide or outfitter did the website him/herself.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Either way, let’s all agree that mobile-friendly website design is important. And with that being said, for guides and outfitters, in either hunting or fishing markets is really no different than any other industry.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           So let’s take a peak at the stats…
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

            I pulled 3 random clients, in
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            and fishing guides, to show exactly what I’m talking about.

        &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Do you notice what the websites all have in common? They’re all almost identical in terms of mobile use percentages.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           So expect 75 to 80% of your website traffic to come from phones
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            (yes, there are exceptions). 
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           So now that we know that most people are visiting your website on a phone, let’s dive into how the design itself, matters.

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;

           There are a few key variables that should be present in EVERY website created for the mobile web, period.
          &#xD;

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Speed Matters
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           People are impatient, and phones aren’t always connected to high-speed Internet, so speed is vital.  Not only that, but
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            a slow website can hurt your rankings in search engines (equaling less traffic)
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            .  Google doesn’t like to serve up SLOW websites in their rankings.  We aim to create every mobile website with around a 1-2 second load time.

           This is true for any mobile-friendly website design.  If one of the main goals is to get phone calls, why make the end-user work to find it?  A phone button or number should ALWAYS be present on a phone.  Your business is a simple click away.

           Make Above the Fold Count

    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            There’s a technical term to web design that’s used a lot nowadays, and that’s called Above the Fold. Above the Fold, to put it simple,
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Above the Fold is what’s displayed on your PC/tablet/phone when they load the page (WITHOUT any scrolling)
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           . Did you know, that MOST people DO NOT scroll the average website? With that being said, you need to make that real estate count. Make it engaging, have a call-to-action button or link, and make it easy to reach you. Simple.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The Back Button is NOT Your Friend
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            This really kind of ties into Above the Fold, but goes a bit further.  When people come to your website, and don’t find what they’re looking for, they will hit the BACK button.  And how often people hit the back button is tracked in Google Analytics as the Bounce Rate.  To put it simply, if your bounce rate is HIGH, that tells Google people aren’t interested in your website. 
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           And high bounce rates mean, you guessed it, bad search engine results.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
             The key is to get users to take action such as clicking and scrolling around the site.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Now that you know what you know about mobile website design for outfitters, take a look at your website or even your competitors. Does it match all the criteria I mentioned? If not, your web designer was either lazy or just doesn’t know about these things. Either way, having a well-optimized website, designed for phones, will be the one that will catch most of the leads (no pun intended).

           With the right advertisement, you can get it in front of the right demographic and for the right price.  You can dial in the age group, target geographically, and manage your spend easily in the dashboard of Facebook.

           We do recommend Facebook marketing for hunting outfitters who are newer.  If the website was built recently, it will take some time for it to mature traffic-wise.  Facebook is a cost-effective way to fill that gap.

           Instagram is kind of on the fringe in terms of the age demographics of it’s users.  According to a source, roughly 17% of their users are between 25 and 34, with around half being under 20 (April 2022).

           There are a handful of ways guys find outfitters today, for the most part.  Referrals are usually the best.  If you have a client who had a good hunting experience, they’re usually going to tell their buddies.

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
        
            Those can dry up, so outside of the inside connections,

    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           how do most people seek out a hunting outfitter?

      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           Searching the web.
          &#xD;

             This isn’t new, but I’m often amazed how often it’s still overlooked.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           If you’re a big game outfitter in say, Colorado for example, people are going to use Google (or Bing) to search for outfitters offering what they’re looking for.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           The result, is usually the following:
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

           This may seem rather obvious, but you’d be surprised how many guides still operate without taking some kind of deposit.  If there’s no skin in the game, as they say, it just makes it too easy to bail on you.

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           A common practice is to take as much as 50% of the trip down for a deposit.  Many also choose to take a fixed amount, such as $500, to cover the event of a no-show.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           Either way, it’s not a bad idea.  And it’s really not that expensive to take deposits up-front, and online.  After all, why wouldn’t you want to make it easy for people to book a trip with you?
           &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;

           Have the Right Paperwork in Place

           I’m not an attorney, so I’m not going to give concrete legal advice.  But I can tell you, coming from a long-time business owner, that having at least a simple contract in place will help protect you in the event of no-shows.

           Before considering using a booking calendar on your website for your marketing, you have to be ready to literally change your “system” of doing business.

           Facebook has been a viable choice for Fishing Charters and Fishing Guides across the country for many years now.  Why?
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           Well first off, it’s considered an “Older People’s Social Media”, which isn’t anything new.  But take a look at your clientele, and tell me the average age of your customers?  I’m going to guess it’s up there.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
        
            The older generations book trips, and have the most money, so reaching them on their social media of choice isn’t a bad option. 
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           With Facebook advertising, you can target exactly what you’re looking for in terms of demographics, geotargeting, etc.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           So for example, these settings do quite well for many:
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;ol&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Set an older age, usually around 40+.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Find the geographic range where most of your clients come from.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Set those with interests in fishing or hunting.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Set a daily spend - done!
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/ol&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           While the exact settings may differ a bit, you get where I’m going with this.  Set your target market and run with it!
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div&gt;&#xD;

           Google Ads Agency

           Very few of our clients run Google Ads.  Just like Facebook, the main reason is quite simply; they don’t have to.  But there are instances where this would be a viable option, especially for brand new websites.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           The day a new website goes live, it normally takes at least 90 days before you start seeing much for results on the search engines, organically (the non-paid results).  So to fill that gap, we often will use Google Ads if the client needs immediate results (while the website catches up organically).
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           Google ads are up our alley, simply because we work with this search engine the most.  There is a drawback, however, in that Google Ads are very complicated to set up.  A few wrong settings and your spend is gobbled up, quick, with often very little to show for it.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           So if you’re looking to take on Google ads, I highly recommend working with an agency for this.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           Keep in mind, MOST marketing firms take a percentage of your spend each month.  I’ve seen as high as ⅔’s of the spend going to the agency, leaving the client only ⅓ of their actual marketing budget going towards their spend.  Ouch.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           So if you’re agency shopping for this, you should ask, out front, how do they charge?  They should be transparent, and if not, run!
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;

    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           Most website owners will roll out the red carpet for premium sponsors, so choose those that do a great job of promoting.  And while social media has taken over for a decade now, you can still find website communities existing in most outdoor niches.

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
